The Rain Between Us
Talent:
................. Story .................. The rain arrived in Hyderabad without warning. Dark clouds gathered over the city during the afternoon, slowly swallowing the sunlight. By evening, the skies opened and water poured down with such force that streets disappeared beneath flowing streams. People rushed for shelter. Shops pulled down shutters. Street vendors covered their carts with plastic sheets. Cars crawled through traffic while motorcycles squeezed through narrow gaps, desperate to escape the storm. Among those caught in the rain was twenty-seven-year-old Arjun Verma. He parked his motorcycle near a small café in Banjara Hills and hurried inside. The warm aroma of coffee welcomed him. The café was crowded. Every chair was occupied. Every table was filled. Only one empty seat remained. As Arjun moved toward it, he noticed a young woman approaching the same table from the opposite direction. Both stopped. For a second they simply looked at each other. The woman smiled first. "Looks like we're after the same table." Arjun laughed. "Looks like it." She glanced around the packed café. "How about we share?" "Sure." That single decision changed everything. The woman introduced herself as Maya Rao. She was twenty-five years old and worked as a journalist for a digital media company. Unlike many people Arjun met, Maya wasn't trying to impress anyone. She spoke naturally. Honestly. Comfortably. Within minutes, they were discussing movies. Then books. Then travel destinations. Then childhood memories. Outside, the rain continued. Inside, two strangers slowly became friends. Hours passed unnoticed. When the storm finally weakened, Maya checked the time and gasped. "I've been here almost four hours." Arjun laughed. "Same." She stood up and picked up her bag. "It was nice meeting you." "You too." For a brief moment neither moved. Both wanted to continue talking. Neither wanted to seem obvious. Finally Maya smiled. "Maybe we'll meet again." Then she left. Arjun watched her disappear into the crowd. For reasons he couldn't explain, he felt disappointed. It was a strange feeling. He had known her for only a few hours. Yet somehow the café felt emptier after she left. Three days later, Arjun received a message. Unknown Number: "Hi. Café girl here." He smiled immediately. Arjun: "Journalist girl?" A reply arrived seconds later. Maya: "Exactly." From that day forward, conversations became a part of daily life. At first, they exchanged occasional messages. Then regular messages. Then phone calls. Then video calls. Days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months. Slowly, without either realizing it, they became important parts of each other's lives. Arjun lived alone in a small apartment. His parents stayed in Vijayawada. Although he loved them deeply, he preferred independence. Most evenings he worked late, returned home, ordered dinner, and watched movies before sleeping. His life followed a predictable routine. Then Maya arrived. Suddenly mornings began with messages. Lunch breaks included conversations. Evenings included laughter. His ordinary days felt brighter. More meaningful. One evening Maya called unexpectedly. "Are you free tomorrow?" "Depends." "Depends on what?" "Whether this is a dangerous question." She laughed. "No danger involved." "Then yes." "Good. We're going somewhere." "Where?" "It's a surprise." The next morning, Maya took him to an old bookstore hidden inside a narrow lane. The building looked ancient. Dusty shelves stretched from floor to ceiling. Thousands of books filled every corner. Arjun stared around in amazement. "I've lived here for years and never knew this place existed." Maya grinned. "That's because you're always staring at computer screens." They spent hours browsing books. Talking. Laughing. Sharing stories. At one point, Maya disappeared behind a shelf. When she returned, she handed him a novel. "Read this." "Why?" "Because it changed my life." Arjun examined the cover. "What if I hate it?" "You won't." "That's a lot of confidence." "I know people." Arjun smiled. "No. You understand people." For a moment Maya looked surprised. Then she smiled softly. "Maybe." Over time, Arjun began noticing little things about her. The way she remembered everyone's birthdays. The way she called her mother every evening. The way she became emotional while talking about social issues. The way she smiled with her entire face. The way she laughed without caring who was watching. He admired her kindness. Her intelligence. Her passion. And somewhere during those months, admiration became something deeper. Something more dangerous. Something that kept him awake at night. Love. One Sunday evening they visited a lakeside park. The sky burned orange as the sun disappeared beyond the horizon. Families strolled nearby. Children chased pigeons. A cool breeze drifted across the water. Maya sat quietly beside him. "What are you thinking?" Arjun looked at the lake. "Nothing." "That's impossible." "Why?" "Because human beings always think about something." He laughed. "Fine." "So?" "I'm thinking about life." "That's very specific." He smiled. "What about you?" Maya became quiet. Then she answered softly. "I'm thinking about the future." The words lingered in the air. Neither knew how important they would become. A few weeks later, everything changed. Maya stopped replying quickly. Her calls became shorter. Her smile seemed forced. Her energy disappeared. At first Arjun assumed she was busy. Then he became worried. One evening he finally confronted her. "What's going on?" "Nothing." "Maya." She looked away. "Seriously. What's wrong?" For several seconds she remained silent. Then tears appeared in her eyes. "My father is sick." Arjun's heart sank. She explained everything. Doctors had discovered a serious heart condition. Treatment would be expensive. The outcome was uncertain. For weeks she had carried the burden alone. Trying to remain strong. Trying not to fall apart. Now the weight became too much. And she broke down. Without hesitation, Arjun moved closer and held her hand. No speeches. No advice. No empty promises. Just support. Sometimes love begins not with romance, but with presence. And in that moment, Arjun was exactly where she needed him to be. The following months were difficult. Hospital visits became routine. Medical tests filled entire days. Financial concerns created stress. Fear became a constant companion. Yet throughout everything, Arjun stayed beside her. When Maya needed transportation, he drove. When she needed help with paperwork, he helped. When she needed someone to listen, he listened. Never once did he complain. Never once did he ask for anything in return. One night, after leaving the hospital, they sat together on a rooftop overlooking the city lights. The city sparkled below them. Thousands of lights stretched across the darkness. Maya looked exhausted. Emotionally. Physically. Mentally. Suddenly she spoke. "Thank you." Arjun smiled. "For what?" "For not leaving." The words struck him harder than she realized. Because leaving had never been an option. Not anymore. Not after falling in love with her. Not after becoming part of her life. Not after realizing she had become part of his. He looked at her. Really looked at her. And for the first time, he decided to stop hiding. "Maya." She turned toward him. "There's something I need to tell you." Her heartbeat quickened. The city seemed quieter. The night felt still. Arjun took a deep breath. Then he said the words that had lived inside him for months. "I love you." ................................ End ...................
